My time sure does fly, it's already October! Which means fall is officially in full swing and so is SPOOKY SEASON. This month is packed full of planetary events as we slowly start out descent into the darker times of the year.
A little selfless promotion here October 7th my book Twisted Minds, Twisted Fates will be officially published! So, if you are new here TMTF is my first novel based around my haunt character Willow. This is the backstory to my iconic character from Millers Nightmare Haunted Farm. A mix of body horror and gothic horror, this story follows Elizabeth Westfall. The story has romance, torture, and Elizabeths own fracturing mind. (I'll link another blog post talking more in detail about the book). But for now, let's get into this month's upcoming events.
Moon Phases
October 7th: Full Moon that is also a Super Harvest Moon
October 13th: Last Quarter
October 21st: New Moon (will also be the darkest skies of the season!)
October 29th: First Quarter
Astronomical Events
October 2nd: Ceres at opposition
October 6th: Moon near Saturn and Neptune
October 7th: Full Super Moon
October 10th: Moon near Pleiades
October 13th: Moon near Jupiter
October 19th: Moon near Venus; Mercury near Mars
October 20th-21st: Orionids peak
October 29th: Mercury at greatest eastern elongation.
Visible Planets
Saturn: Prime time evening planet, glowing in Aquarius most of the night
Jupiter: Bright in the pre-dawn sky, climbing higher each morning
Neptune: In Pisces, visible with binoculars on clear nights.
Mercury: Makes a comeback late in the month, best around October 29th in evening Twilight
Venus: Still visible in the morning sky but fading later we go into October.
Mars: Hidden this month
Orionids Meteor Shower
The Orionids peak on the night of October 20-21, producing 15-20 meteors per hour. They're fast, often leaving glowing trails, and this year's dark skies make for ideal conditions.
Full blog post will be coming soon.
Draconids
The Draconids arrive earlier in the month but suffer from bright moonlight, so don't expect much - though they're known for surprise outbursts, so it's still worth a look. Full blog post will be coming soon.
Samhain
Samhain (pronounced SOW-in or SAH-win, depending on your tradition) occurs from the evening of October 31st to the evening of November 1st. It marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year. Often dubbed the “Witches’ New Year,” Samhain is a time to honor ancestors, celebrate the harvest, and prepare for the winter months ahead.
Originating from ancient Celtic traditions, Samhain was a time when livestock were slaughtered to provide food for the winter, and bonfires were lit to ward off malevolent spirits. The veil between the physical world and the spirit world is believed to be thinnest during Samhain, making it a potent time for divination, ancestor veneration, and spiritual insights.
Though much of Samhain focuses on honoring the lighter aspects of death—ancestors, the harvest’s end, and the preparation for winter—it’s also a time to acknowledge the darker aspects of mortality. It serves as a reminder that death is a part of the life cycle, not something to be feared but acknowledged as a transition. (again, full blog post coming soon).
Retrogrades
What is a retrograde? There are two definitions, but they essentially say the same thing: in astronomy they describe a retrograde as, a phenomenon that occurs when Earth passes or is passed by another planet, creating an illusion of backward movement due to the relative difference in speed.
In astrology, retrograde literally means "moving backward" and is often associated with periods of reflection and reevaluation. I have a full in detail post about retrogrades (if you are interested) that tells you more about what they are, how they affect you, etc.
October 13th: Pluto retrograde ends at 1 degree in Aquarius. Having started May 4th at 3 degrees in Aquarius. Signs most affected: Scorpio and Aquarius.
"For the first time, this deep, slow-moving planet is fully rooted in Aquarius—a sign of future-thinking, rebellion, and collective evolution. With Pluto here for nearly two decades, the changes we make now ripple far beyond the present.
Retrograde slows Pluto’s intensity, offering space to breathe, reflect, and recalibrate. It’s a powerful time to revisit the shifts we’ve already made, refine our visions, and reshape the dreams we’re daring to believe in. Aquarius reminds us: transformation isn’t just personal—it’s communal, electric, and full of possibility."
That is all in regard to retrogrades this month, November is much livelier so be sure to tune in for that post.
October is a quieter month (as far as astronomical events go) but that is the reason we all love it. Harvest is coming to a close, and the Earth is shifting into the darker and slower days of winter. A time to gather what we planted in the spring (both literally and spiritually) as we enter the season of reflection. So, what plans do you have this month? Visting a haunted house? Or maybe a pumpkin patch to find that perfect jack-o-lantern base. Whatever you have planned let's hear it! leave a comment down below!
